Oneeke is the smaller of the Kuria Islands , which are part of the Gilbert Islands in the Republic of Kiribati .

geography

Oneeke is only separated from the main island Buariki in the southeast by a 20 meter wide channel (low water area Te breeti ). It used to be spanned by a bridge. Today the islands are connected by the Itintoa Causeway , which is only 10 meters long .

The islands are surrounded by a coral reef that is wider on the east side than on the west side. The atoll has no lagoon due to its shape, similar to two triangles that touch with the tips . The reef covers 13.02 km² on a base of 12.7 km². Oneeke has a smaller boat canal through the reef at the main town of the same name in the west.

To the north of Oneeke are brackish fish farms, the King's Fish Ponds .
