Abaiang (formerly Charlotte Island ), also Apaiang or Apia , is a coral atoll of the Gilbert Islands , which is located in the western central Pacific Ocean near the equator and belongs to Kiribati .

geography

Abaiang consists of 11 islands in the northern Gilbert Islands with a total land area of 17.48 km². The central lagoon , with the main passage to the open sea in the west, has an area of about 74.2 km². The total area of the atoll including the coral reef is around 302 km².

In addition to the main island of Teiro and the other inhabited islands of Nuotaea and Ribono, there are also the small, uninhabited islands of Eke , Iaia , Iku , Manra , Nanikirata , Ouba , Taete and Teirio . Ouba and Teirio have small hotel complexes, but are otherwise uninhabited.

history

The atoll was discovered in 1788 by Captain Thomas Gilbert , who named it Matthew's Island after the owner of his ship Charlotte . He named the lagoon Charlotte Bay and the main island Point Charlotte . Later the atoll was known as Charlotte Island .

The first important missionary to visit Abaiang was the American Hiram Bingham ; he reached the atoll in November 1857 on the Morning Star mission ship together with his wife Clara and the Hawaiian aid missionary Kanoa and his wife, whereupon the Protestant missionary work on the Gilbert Islands began.

During the Second World War , the Japanese occupied the atoll from December 1941 to November 1943. After the Battle of the Gilbert Islands , the Americans used it as a base for their attack on the Marshall Islands .

population

According to the 2010 census , Abaiang has 5502 people, exactly as many as in 2005. In contrast, individual villages recorded increases and decreases. With the exception of the villages on the islands of the same name Nuotaea and Ribono, all other 16 villages are located on the main island Teiro on the eastern edge of the atoll (not to be confused with the small island Teirio ).
