Hiram Bingham II (born August 16, 1831 , Honolulu , Hawaii , † October 25, 1908 , Baltimore , Maryland ) was a Protestant missionary in Hawaii and the Gilbert Islands .

Life

Bingham was born in Honolulu. He was the sixth child of Hiram Bingham I (1789–1869) and Sybil Moseley Bingham (1792–1848). The parents had moved to Honolulu from Boston , Massachusetts in 1819 . At the age of ten, Bingham was sent back to the United States in 1840 with his sisters Elizabeth Kaahumanu (1829-1899) and Lydia Bingham (1834-1915) to attend school there. Hiram was enrolled at Williston Seminary in Easthampton , Massachusetts and graduated from Yale University in 1853 .

Bingham was ordained a Congregational minister on November 9, 1856 in New Haven , Connecticut . Nine days later, on November 18, Bingham married Clara Brewster 'in Northampton , Massachusetts. The newlyweds went to Honolulu, where they arrived on April 24, 1857. They served in the community work of the native Hawaiians (Hawaiʻi maoli). Over time, the couple traveled to different Island Worlds in the Pacific in order there, the Christianity spread.

After a brief return to the United States in 1865, they traveled to the Marquesas Islands via Honolulu (March 13, 1867) . They crossed Micronesia and returned to Honolulu in 1868, where they settled. Bingham was the first to translate the Bible into Gilbertian , and he authored several hymns , dictionaries, and Bible commentaries in that language.

From 1877 to 1880, Bingham served as Secretary of the Hawaiian Board and in 1895 Yale awarded him the Doctor of Divinity . He died on October 25, 1908 in Baltimore , Maryland .

Bingham's son, Hiram Bingham III. , was an explorer who later became a senator and brief governor of Connecticut . His grandson, Hiram Bingham IV , was US Vice Consul in Marseille , France during World War II , who saved Jews from the Holocaust . Another grandson, Jonathan Brewster Bingham , was a longstanding Congressman for the Bronx for the Reform Democratic movement from the mid-1960s to the 1980s.
