The Kyrenia District is a district of the Republic of Cyprus . The capital is the city of Kyrenia . It is the smallest district in the Republic of Cyprus.
Since the Turkish military offensive in 1974 , the Kyrenia district no longer exists de facto ; it corresponds to the Girne district of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . It is the only district of the Republic of Cyprus over which it no longer exercises control, not even in part of it. Formally, this still exists and acts as a representative of the displaced residents.
The Byzantine Church of Antiphonitis has since suffered.
