Presidential election in Kiribati 2012

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential election in Kiribati 2012 took place on January 13, 2012, following the parliamentary election in Kiribati on October 21 and October 28, 2011 for the tenth Maneaba ni Maungatabu for the 2012-2015 term.

The incumbent President Anote Tong sought re-election for his third term and ended a long period of speculation about his renewed candidacy decision.

Candidates

On November 25, 2011, Taomati T. Luta from the ruling BTK party was re-elected as speaker in the first parliamentary session . On the same day, three presidential candidates were nominated by parliament: BTK's Anote Tong, who has been in office since 2003 , the doctor and politician Tetaua Taitai and the former leader of the Karikirakean Tei-Kiribati party Rimeta Beniamina , son of the former Vice President Beniamina Tiinga .

Election date

The election day originally scheduled for December 30, 2011, was postponed to January 13, 2012 to allow voters to travel to and from their home islands on the occasion of the New Year.

voter turnout

The turnout in the 23 constituencies was around 68% of the approximately 40,000 registered voters. It was thus higher than the roughly 50% turnout in the presidential election in Kiribati in 2007 , which the opposition at the time, including Tong's brother Harry Tong , called for a boycott .

Election result

President Tong was re-elected for his third term from 2012 to 2015 with 42% of the vote, beating Tetaua Taitai and Rimeta Beniamina, the opposition leader in the previous parliament.
