Presidential election in Kiribati 2007

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2007 presidential election in Kiribati took place on October 17, 2007, following the parliamentary elections held in Kiribati on August 22, 2007 and August 30, 2007 for the ninth Maneaba ni Maungatabu .

Four candidates were nominated during the first session of Parliament: Anote Tong, Patrick Tatireta , Timon Aneri and Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa . Harry Tong (Anote Tong's brother) and Tetaua Taitai , who were nominated by the opposition, were not nominated as presidential candidates in the second ballot either, whereupon the opposition called for a boycott of the election.

As a result of the call for an election boycott, the turnout was just over 50% of the approximately 43,000 registered voters. Tong won over 15,500 votes, Mwemwenikarawa won over 8,000 votes, Tatireta and Aneri each won under 400 votes.

President Anote Tong was re-elected with just over 64% of the vote from 23 electoral districts, entering his second term.

On October 23, 2007, Tong appointed his second cabinet of eleven members, who were sworn in on the same day.
