Min Ko Naing

Min Ko Naing , actually Paw Oo Tun, ( Burmese မင်းကိုနိုင် or ပေါ် ဦး ထွန်း ; born October 18, 1962 in Rangoon , Burma ) is a Myanmar student leader.

The then 25-year-old zoology student Paw Oo Tun made his first appearance in March 1988 on the occasion of the ongoing unrest in what was then Burma , now Myanmar . With the expansion of the unrest, which culminated in the carnage of August 8, 1988, he rose to become the leader of the students in Rangoon under the pseudonym Min Ko Naing ('The Conqueror of the Kings ') and founded the All Burma Federation of Student Unions . After the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) came to power under General Saw Maung , Min Ko Naing was arrested on March 23, 1989 . It was not until November 18, 2004 - at the age of 42 - that he was released again as part of a mass release by the military government. He joined forces with other fellow students to form the "88 generation students" movement. When the latter organized a protest march against the drastic increase in fuel prices at the beginning of the demonstrations in Myanmar in August 2007, he and other activists, including Ko Ko Gyi , were arrested again. On November 11, 2008, a special court in Maupin Prison sentenced Min Ko Naing and other student movement leaders to 65 years in prison. In January 2012, he was released from custody with nearly 600 other political prisoners.

He was honored with the Homo Homini Prize 2000 for his advocacy for human rights.
