Saw Maung

Generalissimo Saw Maung ( Burmese စောမောင် ; * May 12, 1928 in Mandalay , British India ; † July 24, 1997 in Rangoon ) was a politician in Myanmar .

Saw Maung put himself to power on September 18, 1988 with the support of Ne Win , ousting the civilian president Dr. Maung Maung and on the same day had the demonstrations of the democracy movement suppressed and thus restore military rule after a month. On September 21, 1988, he also took over the office of Prime Minister. The former single party Ne Win, Burma Socialist Program Party , let Saw Maung resolved, however, established instead, the realigned military regime as a " State Council for the restoration of law and order " (SLORC; State Law and Order Restoration Council), the Saw Maung as Chairman , among other things, banned all gatherings of more than four people and brutally cracked down on violators.

In the years 1988 to 1991, Saw Maung took on the office of Foreign Minister, among other functions. In April 1992 he was overthrown internally by hardliners in a palace revolt because his crackdown on the Aung San Suu Kyi uprising was not harsh enough and it was feared that he could hand over the government to Suu Kyi. To this end, he was sedated and alleged to have a nervous disease in public. As a result, he had to hand over power, officially for health reasons, to his deputy Than Shwe .
