Peter Praet [ praːt ] (born January 20, 1949 in Herchen , today Windeck , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a Belgian economist . From 2011 to 2019 he was a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) and in this role from 2012 Chief Economist of the ECB.

The son of a Belgian military doctor and a German studied at the Université Libre de Bruxelles where he received his BA in 1971, his MA in 1972 and his PhD in 1980 . His dissertation was entitled Les gains en capital envisagés comme un élargissement du revenu . He taught at the Université Libre from 1980 to 1987. Later he was chief economist at Fortis Bank and from 2000 to 2011 a member of the board of directors of the Belgian National Bank .

On January 3, 2012, it was announced that Praet will be the new Chief Economist of the ECB under its President Mario Draghi . Previously, the board members Jörg Asmussen and Benoît Cœuré had been favored for the post. Praet is the first non-German to be appointed chief economist of the ECB. His predecessors as chief economists were Otmar Issing (1998 to 2006) and Jürgen Stark (2006 to 2011). After eight years of membership in the board of directors, Praet resigned from the committee in June 2019. His successor as chief economist was Philip R. Lane .
