Benoît Cœuré (born March 17, 1969 in Grenoble , France ) is a French economist . From 2012 to 2019 he was a member of the board of directors of the European Central Bank .

Life

Cœuré first studied at the elite university Ecole Polytechnique (X) and at the same time Japanese , then at the École nationale de la statistique et de l'administration économique (ENSAE). He worked for the National Statistical Office of France (INSEE) and was the director of Agence France Trésor .

At their meeting in Brussels on November 29, 2011, the EU finance ministers voted unanimously for Benoît Cœuré as a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB). In January 2012, Cœuré succeeded Lorenzo Bini Smaghi . After an eight-year term in office, he left the board at the end of 2019.

On May 20, 2015, Benoît Cœuré hit the headlines when it became known that he had passed inside information to hedge funds. No legal consequences were drawn from this, however, as the question of whether the ECB is subject to disclosure requirements has not been conclusively clarified.

Following his work at the ECB, Cœuré moved to the Bank for International Settlements in January 2020 to take over the management of its technology center ( Innovation Hub ).
