Philipsburg is the capital of Sint Maarten , the country belonging to the Kingdom of the Netherlands on the Caribbean island of St. Martin . In 2011 the place had 1327 inhabitants.

Founded in 1763 by the Scottish captain of the Dutch Navy, John Philips, the port city soon advanced to become an internationally important trading center . The courthouse built in 1793 is a fine example of West Indian colonial architecture .

The city's port is a mooring point for cruise ships visiting the island and is currently being expanded. At the moment, up to eight cruise giants can moor in Philipsburg at the same time. Then up to 20,000 day tourists spread out in the city's shopping streets or head for other tourist attractions on the island from Philipsburg, such as B. Marigot , the capital of the French part of the island, or Maho Beach , from where the planes taking off or landing at Princess Juliana International Airport can be observed from a few meters away. Philipsburg lives from the day tourists who can shop here duty-free . When they return to the ships, most of the bars, restaurants and shops close.
