Portia Lucretia Simpson Miller , ON (born December 12, 1945 in Wood Hall , St. Catherine ) is a Jamaican politician with the People's National Party (PNP). She was the first woman to hold the post of Prime Minister of Jamaica from March 31, 2006 to September 10, 2007, and was again Prime Minister of Jamaica from January 5, 2012 to March 3, 2016.

Life

Simpson Miller attended the Union Institute in Miami where she received a degree in public administration .

She was Minister of Labor from 1993 to 2000 and subsequently headed the Ministry of Tourism and Sport. On February 26, 2006, she replaced Percival J. Patterson as chairman of the majority party PNP and took over the post of Prime Minister from him less than a month later, according to Jamaican suffrage. In the election for the party chairmanship, she prevailed against Peter Phillips with 1,775 to 1,538 .

In the parliamentary elections on September 3, 2007, the PNP lost its majority to the Jamaica Labor Party , and Simpson Miller has been the opposition leader since then. In the early elections on December 29, 2011, the PNP won a clear majority and Simpson Miller was again Prime Minister and held the office from January 5, 2012 to March 3, 2016.

On May 29, 2006, she was awarded the Order of the Nation, the second highest honor in the Jamaican state.
