Cuddalore ( Tamil : கடலூர் Kaṭalūr [ ˈkaɖəluːr ], French Gondelour , formerly also: Cudulur ) is a port city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 174,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is the administrative seat of the district of Cuddalore .

Cuddalore is just inland from the Coromandel Coast , about 20 kilometers south of Puducherry and 160 kilometers south of Chennai . The city is traversed by the Gadilam , which shortly after flows into the Bay of Bengal .

history

Cuddalore was an important port city even in ancient times. In the late 17th century the British acquired the port and built Fort St. David south of the city . From 1746 until the temporary capture by the French in 1758, in the course of the Seven Years' War , Cuddalore was the administrative seat for the possessions of the British East India Company on the Coromandel Coast. Then Madras took over this function, which rose to the most important British base in South India, while Cuddalore lost increasingly in importance. During the Second Mysore War , Fort St. David fell into French hands again in 1782. In the following year a British siege and the attempt to recapture ( Siege of Cuddalore ) failed . The Mangalore peace treaty of March 11, 1784 restored the status quo ante bellum (ownership before the war). Cuddalore was returned to the British.

Cuddalore has been a municipality since May 9, 1993 . It has an area of 27.69 km² and is divided into 45 wards .

Today the port of Cuddalore only plays a role for coastal shipping, as an export port it is practically insignificant. The city's economy is primarily shaped by the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, fishing and shipbuilding are of some importance.

In December 2004, a tsunami caused by a seaquake in the Indian Ocean wreaked havoc in the port and on the fishing beaches in front of the city. At least 572 people were killed.

population

89 percent of the population of Cuddalore are Hindus , 6 percent Muslim and 4 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 95 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
