- Leavenworth / United States : Charles Graner , the main culprit and last convicted person in custody in the Abu Ghraib torture scandal , is released early on parole after six and a half years in prison.

- London / United Kingdom : Serious riots broke out in Tottenham on the night of August 6th , after a local was shot by police two days earlier. 26 police officers were injured, several shops were vandalized and set on fire.
- Praia / Cape Verde : In the first round of the presidential elections , Jorge Carlos Fonseca got 37.3% of the votes cast, while Manuel Inocêncio Sousa got 32% and Aristides Lima got 27.4%. Jorge Carlos Fonseca and Manuel Inocêncio Sousa will face a runoff on August 21st.
- São Tomé / São Tomé and Príncipe : In the runoff election for the presidency , Manuel Pinto da Costa wins with 53% of the vote, while his opponent Evaristo Carvalho wins 47%.
