The 2011 men's European field hockey championship was held from August 20 to 28 in Mönchengladbach together with the women's European championship. It was the thirteenth edition of the men's European field hockey championship . The team of the Federal Republic of Germany, which defeated the team of the Netherlands in the final, became European champions; England took third place ahead of Belgium.
At the same time, the tournament was seen as a qualification opportunity for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Three places were awarded to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, who finished fourth in the European Championship, as England, who was third in the European Championship, was automatically qualified as the host country for the Olympic Games.
The third and fourth of both groups formed a relegation group. The last two had to relegate to the Nations Trophy, from which the Czech Republic and Poland rose for the EM 2013 . The games of the third against the fourth in the same group were taken over from the preliminary round. The teams of Russia and France had to be relegated to the 2011 EuroHockey Nations Trophy as the last of the relegation round .
The first three teams and the host had qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Since England, which represented Great Britain, was qualified as host, all teams in the final round had made the Olympic qualification.
