The 2009 European field hockey championship took place in Amstelveen from August 22nd to 30th . It was the twelfth edition of the men's field hockey championship . The winner was England, who defeated the German national team in the final with 5: 3 goals. The English secured their first European title. The German team missed a historic third European Championship victory in a row and became the first men's team in hockey history to become Olympic, world and European champions at the same time.

Attendees

In addition to the first six teams of the European Championship 2007 , the two finalists of the EuroHockey Nations Trophy 2007 Austria and Poland took part in the competition. The two newcomers could not prevail and were relegated to the Nations Trophy after the EM.

Placement games

Relegation games

The third and fourth of both groups form a relegation group. The last two have to relegate to the Nations Trophy, from which Ireland and Russia are promoted for the 2011 European Championship . The games of the third against the fourth are taken over from the preliminary group.
