The men's European field hockey championship in 1978 was the third edition of the men's European field hockey championship . It took place from September 2nd to 10th in Hanover . The German selection won its second title as host.

Participant and mode

Twelve teams took part. The six best placed at the 1974 European Championship , Spain, the Netherlands, England, Poland, France and host Germany , qualified first . The six teams, the Soviet Union, Scotland, Wales, Gibraltar, Ireland and Czechoslovakia, reached the finals through qualifying tournaments and comparisons.

Initially, the game was played in two groups of six. The two best placed in each group then played in the semifinals. The third and fourth placed players played for places 5 to 8 and the fifth and sixth placed of the groups played for places 9 to 12.
