The 1987 men's European field hockey championship was the fifth edition of the men's European field hockey championship . It took place in Moscow from August 20-30, 1983 . The defending champion Netherlands had to shoot again in the final. There the Dutch were able to prevail 3-0 against the English.

12 teams took part. In addition to the host Soviet Union, these were the 5 best of the 1983 European Championship - the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, England and France. In addition, six teams from the three qualifying tournaments qualified: Poland, Belgium, Scotland, Italy, Ireland, Wales.

Initially, the game was played in two groups of six. The best two played in the semifinals, the others for places.
