The 4th Men's Field Hockey European Championship 1983 was held from August 18 to 28, 1983 in Amsterdam , Netherlands. Defending champion Germany finished the tournament in third place. Host Netherlands secured their first title with a 12:10 shoot-out against the Soviet Union .

Participant and mode

Twelve teams competed. The Netherlands were set as hosts, but were among the six best of the 1978 European Championship , along with Germany, England, Spain, Poland and Wales , who were also qualified. In addition, there were the six teams Belgium, Scotland, the Soviet Union, France, Ireland and Austria, who reached the European Championship through five qualifying tournaments or comparisons. After the group stage, which was played in two groups, the placement games took place. The first two of the groups played in the semifinals, the third and fourth for places 5 to 8 and the fifth and sixth for places 9 to 12.
