The 9th Men's Field Hockey European Championship 2003 was held from September 1st to 13th in Barcelona , where the European Championship for women and men was held together for the first time . In the final, defending champion Germany won 6-5 after a nine-meter shootout against Spain . Ireland , Italy , Russia and Switzerland relegated to "B-EM" .

After this European Championship, the competition was divided. The first eight qualified for the 2005 European Championship . The other four played in the Nations Trophy 2005 for promotion.
