The 2017 European Field Hockey Championship for women was the 13th edition of the European Field Hockey Championship for women. It took place from August 18 to 27, 2017 in Amstelveen , Netherlands, together with the European Men's Championship. The venue was the Wagener Stadium . The defending champion was England .

Stadion

All European Championship matches are played in the venerable Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen , which has a new main stand in preparation for the European Championship. It was the third time , after 1995 and 2009 , that a European Championship was held in this stadium. The winners of the two previous editions were the Netherlands .

mode

The preliminary round was contested in two groups of four teams each in an everyone-against-everyone format. The first two of each group qualified for the semi-finals. As usual in international hockey, a game for third place was played. The last two of the two groups formed group C and played for participation in the following European championship. The teams took the result against the nation from their own group. The last two out of the group of four were relegated to the B pool and the first two were allowed to take part in the next European championship.
