After 1983 and 2009, a European Championship took place in this stadium for the third time. The winners of the two editions were the Netherlands in 1983 and England in 2009 .
mode
The preliminary round was played in two groups of four teams in an everyone-against-everyone format. The first two of each group qualified for the semi-finals. As usual in international hockey, a game for third place was played. The last two of the two groups formed group C and played for participation in the following European championship. The teams took the result against the nation from their own group. The last two out of the group of four were relegated to the B pool and the first two were allowed to take part in the next European championship.
