The men's field hockey championship in 1970 was the first men's field hockey championship . It took place in Brussels from September 18-27 . (West) Germany became the first European champion with a 3-1 final victory over the Netherlands. The top four teams qualified for the 1971 World Cup .
mode
The group stage of the tournament was played in groups of four and three groups of five. The first and second placed in each group reached the quarter-finals. The third and fourth placed fought for places 9 to 16. The last placed of the three groups of five played the places 17 to 19.
