Life

Hazare was born in 1937 and is Hindu . In 1963 he joined the army after India lost the Indo-Chinese border war . During the Second Indo-Pakistani War in 1965, he was the only survivor of a Pakistani air strike against the border post where he was stationed. In 1975 Hazare left the military. Then he helped to improve the quality of life in his impoverished home village. In particular, according to the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi , the sustainability of agriculture has been improved. In 1991 he founded the popular movement against corruption . In 1992 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan , the third highest Indian civil order, for his commitment .

On April 5, 2011, Hazare went on hunger strike to encourage the government to take anti-corruption measures. It sparked a mass movement that formed on the Internet, among other places. The government finally complied and set up a commission made up of government officials and civil society actors to deal with the problem. On April 9th, Hazare broke off the hunger strike.

Since, in his opinion, the draft law that was presented to parliament left many points open and was not suitable to solve the problem of corruption, Hazare announced that he would go on a hunger strike again in August. He was arrested on August 16 and was only to be released on condition not to starve. Hazare then started his hunger strike in prison and voluntarily stayed there. He left the detention center on August 19 and initially continued his high-profile hunger strike. Only after Parliament had signaled its willingness to respond to Hazare's essential demands during its deliberations on an anti-corruption law did he break off his action on August 28, 2011. In front of tens of thousands of cheering supporters in central New Delhi, he took a few sips of coconut milk and honey. His demands included the creation of an independent agency to oversee all ministers, MPs, and officials, as well as ombudsmen in all 29 states.
