- Astana / Kazakhstan : incumbent Nursultan Nazarbayev wins the presidential election with 95% of the vote; the OSCE described the election as undemocratic.
- Bamako / Mali : With Cissé Mariam Kaïdama Sidibé , a woman takes over the office of Prime Minister for the first time.
- Berlin / Germany : The party leader of the FDP , Guido Westerwelle , announces his resignation from the office at the upcoming party congress. In addition, he is renouncing his office as Vice Chancellor , but remains Federal Foreign Minister .
- Dera Ghazi Khan / Pakistan : At least 42 people are killed and more than 100 others are injured in several Taliban attacks .
- Zurich / Switzerland : In the cantonal elections , the SVP remains the strongest force with 29.6% of the vote, ahead of the SP with 19.3%. The winners of the election day are the Green Liberals , who almost doubled their share of the vote to 10.3%, and the BDP , which is represented in the Cantonal Council for the first time with 3.5%.

The previously ruling Center Party lost 7.3 percentage points and only got 15.8% of the vote.
