Kidnapping in Ukraine

On the night of February 18-19, 2011, Abu Sisi was kidnapped from a train while on a trip to the Ukraine under circumstances that have not yet been clarified . He was on his way to Kiev to meet his brother who lived in Amsterdam and to apply for Ukrainian citizenship. His wife, Veronika Abu Sisi, who is a Ukrainian citizen, told reporters that she suspected "her husband was kidnapped by the Israeli foreign intelligence service Mossad and taken to Israel ." The Palestinian Ministry of the Interior has made an urgent appeal to the Ukrainian authorities to to reveal the background to the disappearance of Abu Sisi.

Richard Silverstein reported on 3 March 2011 in his on the Middle East conflict specialized blog Tikun Olam that Abu Sisi in Israeli incommunicado located. After a human rights organization protested the blackout that banned the Israeli press and Israeli accredited correspondents from reporting on the case, Israeli authorities admitted on March 20, 2011 that Abu Sisi was being held in Shikma prison in Ashkelon , where he was also had a criminal defense attorney. The Ukrainian authorities deny that they were involved in his abduction.

Indictment in Israel

On March 24, 2011, according to Haaretz , Abu Sisi was brought before the Petach Tikwa District Court for a detention test . Israel accused the engineer of being a senior member of Hamas and of having information about the soldier Gilad Shalit, who was kidnapped in 2006 . At a hearing on March 31, 2011 about the extension of his pre-trial detention, Abu Sisi protested that he was only an engineer and knew nothing about the whereabouts of the Israeli soldier.

On April 4, 2011, a lawsuit was brought against Dirar Abu Sisi at the Be'er Sheva District Court . “The engineer is charged with hundreds of murders. He is also accused of leading Hamas' combat training and manufacturing rockets for the terrorist organization. ”The indictment accuses the engineer of having played a leading role in the development of rockets and armor-piercing shells since 2002. From 2009 he is said to have been head of the Hamas "military academy". Abu Sisi studied electrical engineering at the military technical academy in Kharkiv and completed his studies with a doctorate ( Ph.D. ). His mentor at the university is “Prof. Konstantin Petrovich , an expert in control systems for Scud missiles ”. A connection to Shalit is not accused. The circumstances of the arrest could not be discussed when the charges were brought. Abu Sisi pleaded not guilty. His lawyer said his client was under pressure to sign indictment documents that he could not read. The court imposed pre-trial detention pending trial.

According to the Ukrainian daily Sevodnja , the Israeli information on Abu Sisi's training is incorrect. There would be no "Prof. Konstantin Petrovich “, the weapons expert. According to the Vernadskyj National Library's online catalog , Abu Sisi received his doctorate from the Kharkiv State Academic of Municipal Economy in 1999 for a thesis on improving the quality of electricity in urban electricity networks. (It may be a translation error. The English-language doctoral certificate says that “Derar Mousa Abusisi” obtained his Ph.D. in “Engineering Sciences, Specialty: Power Stations Networks and Systems” at the Technical University of Kharkiv in 1999. )

In an interview with the newspaper, Veronika Abu Sisi added that her husband completed a preparatory course in Yerevan and then studied in Zaporozhye at the Machine Building Institute (meaning the institute for mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Zaporozhye ). The engineer's wife calls the accusations against her husband “pieced together by Israel to justify his kidnapping and illegal arrest”. She has announced that she will file a lawsuit against Israel and Ukraine at the European Court of Human Rights .

A representation in Pravda is consistent with the information given by the wife. The Russian daily publishes relevant documents and reports on the suspicion that the Ukrainian security service SBU was involved in the abduction of Abu Sisi. On June 23, 2011, an Israeli court confirmed that Abu Sisi would remain in custody until the end of the trial. On the same day, his wife announced that she would sue Ukraine for inaction in the kidnapping case.

In August 2011 Abu Sisi made a partial confession and admitted that he had carried out experiments for Hamas to increase the range of its surface-to-surface missiles as well as preliminary administrative work for the establishment of a military academy. However, he showed a certain distance from Hamas and stated that he had been threatened with death by its leadership when he had indicated that he wanted to leave the organization.

In February 2012, his lawyer stated that Abu Sisi had lost 30 kilograms while in custody and was suffering from kidney disease and high blood pressure . In March 2015, the District Court found him in Beersheba an agreement with the prosecution for a long list of offenses within guilty. The final verdict is still pending, the prosecution has requested a 21-year prison sentence.
