Shikma Prison

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The shikma prison (Hebrew כלא שקמה) is an Israeli prison in Ashkelon .

history

The complex, which is surrounded by high walls, was built in 1930 by Great Britain during its League of Nations mandate for Palestine in the typical fortress style and used as the southern headquarters. In 1948 the fortress was taken over by the newly founded State of Israel and from 1949 it served as the Ashkelon police station. From 1968 the building was used increasingly and now exclusively as a prison. Over the years there have been numerous conversions, extensions and modernizations. Among other things, a high-security wing was added.

today

The prison has about 650 prisoners, and is used for both criminal as well as remand prisoners used. The convicts include murderers, rapists, pedophiles and terrorists. The detention center is subordinate to the Israeli correctional authority Sherut Batei HaSohar (abbreviation: Schabas).

The cells are equipped with radio and television sets, but do not have cable television connections . Due to the age of the building complex, the pipe system does not allow air conditioning, but there are fans. Prisoners can buy hospital meals two to three times a month in the prison shop; the money for this comes from family members or, if they are not available, from the prison administration. Social workers take care of the rehabilitation of the prisoners and prepare them through measures such as B. Leave imprisonment for a life free from prison, some of the guards are social education students from the local college. In addition to the normal guards, security is provided by the Schabas special forces in Nachschon ( prisoner transport ), Dror (in-house drug control) and Matsada (counterinsurgency / hostage liberation).

criticism

The Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu , who served the majority of his 18-year prison sentence for treason here from 1993 to 2004, reports that contact was largely blocked , which was maintained in a weakened form even after his release. In 1997 a terrorist suspect was reported at a UN hearing, alleging that he had been ill-treated in Shikma prison. Israeli authorities admitted that they had exerted pressure on the man during interrogation, but rejected the allegation of torture and pointed out that the intensive interrogation prevented another attack. Three women were killed and around fifty other people were injured in the attack on a restaurant in Tel Aviv , which the accused was accused of . In 2002, one case of solitary confinement and one contact ban was reported to the UN, and a lawyer was denied access to his client for ten days. In 2004, 350 shikma inmates took part in a nationwide hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners during which they only drank water. The aim of the strike was to improve prison conditions, such as B. the end of body searches or the lifting of the recently introduced ban on cell phones . The strike was to be fought by the Israeli side, among other things, by grilling meat in the prison yards and ended after 14 days. The detainees on remand currently include the Palestinian terror suspect Dirar Abu Sisi , who was kidnapped in Ukraine in February 2011.

In 2016, NGOs B'Tselem and Hamoked accused Israeli security forces of ill-treatment at the prison's Shabak interrogation center based on accounts of 116 Palestinian prisoners . Sleep deprivation and restraint were given as examples.
