Prasat Ta Khwai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prasat Ta Khwai ( Thai : ปราสาท ตา ควาย , also: Prasat Ta Wai - ปราสาท ตา วาย or Prasat Ta Sawai , Khmer : Ta Krabey - ប្រាសាទ តា ក្របី ) are the remains of a Khmer temple on the border between Thailand and Cambodia . They are in the district ( Amphoe ) Phanom Dong Rak of the province of Surin in the northeast region of Thailand, the so-called Isan .

geography

The ruins of Prasat Ta Khwai are difficult to access in the jungle that covers the Dongrek Mountains between Thailand and Cambodia. The area is bounded by rock walls to the west and south. There is a stone platform to the north and east. The terrain slopes to the east, but whether or not there is a baray has not yet been investigated as the area was mined by the Khmer Rouge .

Prasat Ta Khwai consists of a single prang , but it seems unfinished as the lintels were placed but the stonemasons never started. Due to the similarities with the Ta Keo near Siem Reap , the building could be dated to around the end of the 10th / beginning of the 11th century.

Border disputes

According to the Thai representation, the border runs along the watershed of the Dongrek Mountains according to the treaty between Siam and France of March 23, 1907. In 2000 the "Thai-Cambodian Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary" (JBC) was set up to measure the border between the two countries.

On August 3, 2008, a group of 30 Cambodian soldiers entered Thai territory. After negotiations at the local level, however, they withdrew after three days. On September 6, it was reported that around 70 Cambodian soldiers had occupied the temple grounds. In response, 35 Thai paramilitaries were concentrated there. The commanding general of the Thai Second Army region was then able to secure a peaceful withdrawal of the Cambodian troops on September 13 and 14, 2008 in negotiations with the appropriate Cambodian agency. It was also agreed that a small group of soldiers would be stationed on both sides.

In the early morning of April 22, 2011 - according to Thai reports - the Cambodian military began to bombard the temple area with heavy weapons. Cambodian sources report that the tower of Prasat Ta Khwai was destroyed. Three Cambodian and two Thai soldiers were killed in the fighting on the first day.
