The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton took place on 29 April 2011 in Westminster Abbey in London instead. It was performed according to the Anglican rite except for the vow of "obedience". Middleton thus continued the tradition of Diana who, when she married Prince Charles in 1981, renounced this word, which is traditionally an element of the marriage vows in the Anglican rite.

The wedding is considered a major media event and was accompanied by the mass media worldwide. Among other things, the service was broadcast on the YouTube video platform .

Bridal couple

The groom is HRH William, Duke of Cambridge, Prince of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the bride Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" Middleton. After William received the titles Duke of Cambridge , Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus on the day of his marriage , Catherine Middleton received the courtesy title "Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge" through the wedding .

The groom's parents are Charles, Prince of Wales (born November 14, 1948 in Buckingham Palace , London) and Diana, Princess of Wales (born July 1, 1961 in Sandringham , Norfolk, England; † August 31, 1997 in Paris , France ). The groom's parents were married on July 29, 1981 in St Paul's Cathedral , London. Their marriage was divorced on August 28, 1996.

The bride's parents are Michael Francis Middleton (born June 23, 1949 in Leeds- Chapel Allerton) and Carole Elizabeth Goldsmith (born January 31, 1955 in London-Ealing-Perivale ). The bride and groom married on June 21, 1980 in Dorney, Buckinghamshire . The bride's family is of civil descent.

Groomsmen and Bridesmaids

The bride's sister, Philippa Middleton , and the groom's brother, Prince Harry , acted as witnesses .

More guests

Westminster Abbey can accommodate 1900 invited guests. In addition to the royal family and their friends, these include the Middleton family with friends, the friends of the newlyweds, members of foreign royalty, representatives from the Royal Navy , the Royal Air Force and the British Army , representatives of organizations of which Prince William is patron, and the representatives of the churches. In addition, there are members of the government, parliament and local authorities, members of the diplomatic corps and the governors-general and prime ministers of the countries in which the British monarch is also head of state, and members of the royal household.

The Dean of Westminster , John Hall , led the service as host. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury , Rowan Williams , according to the Anglican rite. The Bishop of London , Richard Chartres , preached the sermon.

The guests included almost the entire royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II , all of her children (with their spouses and children), as well as parts of the rest of the family (descendants of George V ).

Numerous royal guests such as King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Sophia of Spain, Queen Margarethe II of Denmark, Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia of Spain as well as Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden and Prince Albert II of Monaco also attended his fiancée at the time, Charlene Wittstock , was present.

The invitation for the Syrian ambassador to Great Britain, which had already been issued, was withdrawn because of the actions of the Syrian government against pro-democratic demonstrators during the protests in Syria in 2011 . The Crown Prince of Bahrain , Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Chalifa , canceled his participation after he was sharply criticized in the British press for the brutal actions taken against opposition groups in his country . Although former Prime Ministers John Major and Margaret Thatcher were invited, their Labor successors Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were not invited, according to official reasons, because Blair and Brown are not Knights of the Garter , but Thatcher and Major are. This decision provoked criticism.

After the service, the Queen gave a reception for 600 people. In the evening, 300 people were invited by the Prince of Wales to dinner at Buckingham Palace.

costs

Bodyguard: The Yeomen of the Guard

The equivalent of around 25 million euros was raised for the security measures alone, and around 5,000 police officers were on duty. The cost of the actual ceremony is borne by the royal family itself. The British government declared April 29 a national holiday, which, according to the Department of Commerce, could result in losses of £ 2.9 billion.

The British business association CBI expects production losses of up to six billion pounds. Critics like the anti-monarchy movement Republic called this a fatal signal in times of brutal austerity programs. The government is hoping for 730 million euros in additional income from souvenirs and tourism, for example. According to a government decision, VisitBritain is allowed to spend an additional £ 100 million to promote tourism with the wedding ceremony. The Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport pays half of this sum.

Prince William and Catherine Middleton have set up a special fund for wedding gifts at the Prince William's Foundation , a joint charitable foundation run by Prince William and his brother Harry, which promotes projects for young people.

reporting

Numerous television channels broadcast the ceremony live. A total of up to 8,000 journalists were expected to report in London. Up to £ 90,000 had to be paid for photo and camera positions during the wedding.

In Germany, the public television channels Das Erste and ZDF broadcast from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Although ARD and ZDF agreed in 2007 to take turns broadcasting royal celebrations, both broadcasters broadcast in parallel for events in the “A royal houses” in Great Britain, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands. According to the broadcasters, the production costs should not exceed those of their normal daily program. ARD and ZDF essentially took over the images from the BBC . Also live transferred RTL , renounced the three hours entirely on advertising and Sat.1 and the news channel n-tv and N24 .

In Switzerland, SF 1 (German), TSR 2 (French) and RSI LA 2 (Italian), in Austria ORF 2 broadcast the ceremony live.

In addition to the live broadcast on YouTube , numerous other network media followed the wedding with their own offers.

wedding dress

The special attention especially the tabloid media was the dress of the bride. For months there was speculation about the choice of designer. Catherine Middleton ultimately opted for a model by Alexander McQueen designed by chief designer Sarah Burton .

The lace of the top and skirt is handcrafted by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace . The design of the lace was hand using the Carrickmacross - clapper made technique, a technique that was developed in the 1820s in Ireland. The flowers of rose, thistle, narcissus and shamrock are individually shaped from lace and embroidered on the silk tulle.

The dress is made of ivory and white satin silk . The hem of the skirt runs into a flower-shaped opening, in arches and folds. The train is 270 centimeters long. The ivory satin bodice, which is narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips, is based on the tradition of Victorian corsetry and is a trademark of Alexander McQueen. The dress is fastened on the back with 58 silk and organza buttons.

The veil is held by the halo diadem, on loan from the Queen. It was made from platinum by Cartier in London in 1936 and worked with 739 brilliant-cut diamonds and 149 baguette-cut diamonds in a wave-like shape in the shape of leaves or palmettes. On November 18, 1936, it was bought by the then Duke of York (later King George VI ) for the Duchess (later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother ), three weeks before he succeeded his brother as king. The diadem was given to Princess Elisabeth ( Elisabeth II ) by her mother on the occasion of her 18th birthday.

The bride's earrings are from Robinson Pelham and are set with diamond-studded stylized oak leaves, a diamond-paved acorn in the center, and pear-shaped diamonds hanging from it. The design was inspired by the new Middleton family crest, which includes acorns and oak leaves. The earrings are a personal gift from the bride's parents.

The hairstyle was created by the London star hairdresser James Pryce, from the Richard Ward company, in the 'Demi Chignon' look.

Kate Middleton's wedding dress is often described as a modern take on Grace Kelly and Cinderella's wedding dresses .
