Philippa Charlotte "Pippa" Matthews (* 6. September 1983 in Reading , England as Philippa Charlotte Middleton ) is the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge .

Life

Pippa Middleton is the middle of three children of Michael Middleton (* 1949) and Carole Middleton (* 1955). Her father's family is from Leeds and her mother's from near Durham . Pippa Middleton received her education in Berkshire and then at Marlborough College . She then studied English literature at the University of Edinburgh . Since graduating in 2008 she has been working as an event manager . She also runs The Party Times , an online magazine on the same website that her parents use to sell party items.

Due to her sister's marriage to the British Prince William , Pippa Middleton has been a part of British high society for years and is a recurring topic in the media. In 2008, for example, she was named England's most sought-after single by the Tatler magazine . She was briefly in a relationship with former cricketer Alex Loudon , they separated in 2011.

The media attention developed into a media hype on the occasion of her appearance as the maid of honor and bridesmaid of her sister at her sister's wedding in 2011 . She wore a white dress designed by Sarah Burton . Both the fact that usually only the bride appears in white - her sister wore an ivory-colored wedding dress - as well as the attractiveness of Middleton, which was emphasized by many commentators, ensured numerous, worldwide strong reactions in social networks, in television reports and in the print media. Various newspapers said that Middleton “almost overshadowed” her sister. She was portrayed by Mary Elise Hayden in the 2011 television movie William and Kate: A Fairy Tale Come True .

The media attention continued, sometimes taking on grotesque and sometimes sexist forms. Her buttocks were highly praised on social networks and even got their own Facebook pages. In 2012, Der Spiegel wrote that Middleton was one of the “most photographed women in the world”. In late 2012, Middleton published a "Party Guide" entitled Celebrate: A Year of Festivities for Families and Friends , for which she received a fee of £ 400,000 from Viking Press . Despite a large-scale advertising campaign, the book, which was largely panned by critics, only found a few thousand buyers. Middleton continued her journalistic activity with a "Cooking Column", which has been published since 2013, for the customer magazine of the British supermarket chain Waitrose.

On July 17, 2016, Pippa Middleton got engaged to British hedge fund manager James Matthews. The two, who have been a couple since the end of 2015, were already dating for a short time in 2012. They were married on May 20, 2017 in the English county of Berkshire . She gave birth to a son on October 15, 2018. His name is Arthur Michael William Matthews.

Ancestors and coat of arms

Coat of
arms of Philippa Middleton

Through her great-grandmother Olive Lupton, Pippa Middleton descends from Sir Thomas Fairfax (Gilling; approx. 1475-1520) and his wife Agnes Gascoigne. Agnes Gascoigne was the granddaughter of Sir William Gascoigne (approx. 1350-1419), Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales , and was born to King Edward III. (1312–1377) and his wife Queen Philippa of Hainaut .

Pippa Middleton is also a descendant of Catherine Carey (Lady Catherine Knollys; 1526-1568), a cousin of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603), whose grandmother was Elizabeth Boleyn, Countess of Wiltshire , daughter of the Duke of Norfolk .

Middleton's father Michael received a family crest on April 19, 2011 on a charter from the College of Arms . The coat of arms shows a golden rafter in the blue-red split shield , accompanied by a silver thread rafter at the top and bottom, the upper one at the top accompanied by two upright golden acorns, the lower one at the bottom by an acorn on a golden stem, with two golden ones pointing upwards at an angle Oak leaves. The variant with the blue ribbon could only be used by Pippa Middleton, as the ribbon indicates an unmarried woman.
