Sarah Jane Burton , OBE (born Heard ; * 1974 in Macclesfield , Cheshire , England ) is a British fashion designer and has been the creative director of the British fashion house Alexander McQueen since 2010 .

Life

Burton grew up with four siblings in Manchester and attended the Withington Girls' School there. She completed her studies in 1997 at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design , for which she moved to London in the early 1990s .

She worked for the British fashion designer Alexander McQueen (1969–2010) from 1996, while still studying and initially as an intern . After graduating from college, McQueen took over and in 2000 was appointed designer of the women's collection. After McQueen's suicide in February 2010, Burton took his place as designer and creative director of the Alexander McQueen fashion house . She presented her first own collection for Alexander McQueen in autumn 2010 at the women's fashion shows in Paris.

In spring 2011, Burton created the wedding dress for Kate Middleton on the occasion of her wedding to Prince William as well as the evening dress for the bride and the bridesmaid dress for Middleton's sister Pippa .

In November 2011, Burton was named Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. In mid-June 2012 she was accepted into the British Order of Knights for her services to the British fashion industry .

Burton lives in London's St. John's Wood with her husband, photographer David Burton .
