Republic is a political campaign in Great Britain that aims to abolish the British monarchy and establish a republic with a democratically elected head of state. The movement was founded for the first time in 1983 and, after being dissolved in the meantime, reorganized itself in 2006. The current chairman is Emily Robinson. The campaign is supported by several MPs from the Labor Party and the Liberal Democrats , as well as the Scottish National Party . In Scotland , the organization has its own sub-organization called Republic Scotland . According to the company, the campaign had 21,000 supporters in 2012, the year of Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee . Republic is united with other republican organizations in the Commonwealth of Nations under the umbrella organization Common Cause .
