Vice Admiral Sir Timothy James Hamilton Laurence KCVO , CB , ADC (P) CSM (born March 1, 1955 in Camberwell , London ) is the second husband of Princess Anne , the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain . He is the son of Guy Stewart Laurence and Barbara Alison Laurence, née Symons.

Timothy Laurence first attended the New Beacon School, then the Sevenoaks School , both in Kent . He then went on a naval scholarship to the University of Durham , where he also edited the student newspaper Palatinate and was the captain of the cricket team. On January 1, 1973 he was promoted to ensign , on January 1, 1975 in the officer rank of acting sub-lieutenant .

Career in the Navy

After completing his studies, Laurence attended the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth , Devon . Because of his special qualifications, he was promoted to lieutenant ten months earlier than usual on March 1, 1977 .

In the following years he served as a navigation officer briefly on the Britannia and then on the destroyer HMS Sheffield . In 1985 he was assigned to the frigate HMS Alacrity when he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander . In 1986 he moved to the post of aide-de-camp from Queen Elisabeth. On December 31, 1988, he was promoted to Commander .

He was transferred to the frigate HMS Boxer , of which he became commander the next year. In 1992 he moved to the Ministry of Defense and two years later became Military Assistant to Defense Minister Malcolm Rifkind .

In 1995 Laurence was promoted to captain and in command of the frigate HMS Cumberland . He then switched to the frigate HMS Montrose and took over command of a flotilla of five frigates the following year.

The next post was then again a staff assignment in the Ministry of Defense. 1998/99 graduated Laurence one academic year at St Antony's College of Oxford University . Simultaneously with the promotion to the commodore he was transferred to the Joint Services Command and Staff College .

In 2001 it was used again in the Ministry of Defense. Three years later, Laurence was promoted to Rear Admiral . From 2007 he was Vice Admiral in charge of the administration of all military properties in the United Kingdom. In 2011 he retired.

Marriage and marriage

From 1986 to 1989 Laurence was stable master at the court of Elisabeth II. During this time he met Princess Anne, whose marriage to Mark Phillips broke up. Laurence and Anne were married in December 1992 in Ballater near Balmoral Castle according to the rite of the Church of Scotland , which allowed divorced people to remarry.

His marriage did not give him a title of nobility . Princess Anne kept her country estate at Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire but temporarily moved into an apartment in London with Laurence, and later moved with him to Buckingham Palace .
