Gatcombe Park is the private country estate of Princess Anne , daughter of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain , in Gloucestershire . The country estate is located between the towns of Minchinhampton and Avening, about 8 km south of the city of Stroud and about 170 km west of London . Princess Anne's brother Prince Charles ' country estate , Highgrove House , is just 10 km south.

The main house was built from natural stone for Edward Sheppard between 1771 and 1774. The Ricardo family had owned the property since 1814, and in 1940 it was bought by the textile industrialist and art collector Samuel Courtauld . His son-in-law, the former British Home Secretary Lord Butler , inherited Gatcombe Park and kept it until 1976. Then the house and farm were bought by Queen Elizabeth II for Princess Anne and her husband Mark Phillips . There are several buildings on the site.

After renovations, the couple moved to Gatcombe Park in November 1977. The main house has five large and four small bedrooms, four reception rooms, a library, a billiard room, a winter garden and staff rooms. In 1978 the neighboring Aston Farm was bought, so that the entire area today covers 3 km², of which 0.8 km² is forest. In addition to a trout pond, the property also includes stables for Princess Anne's animals.
