history

Hillsborough Castle is actually less of a castle than a Georgian mansion. It was built in the 18th century for the noble Hill family , Marquesses of Downshire . In 1922 Lord Arthur Francis Henry Hill, the 7th Marquess of Downshire sold the property to the British government. This was able to solve a precarious problem, namely to establish an official seat of government for the Governor of Northern Ireland after the separation of Northern Ireland and the South of Ireland by the Government of Ireland Act 1920 , since the previous Governor's seat Dublin was now located in the independent Republic of Ireland .

The official handover after renovation and rebuilding took place in 1925.
