history

The ship, commissioned in 1989, was built in Scotland. The maximum speed is 32  knots . In the early 1990s, Timothy Laurence , Princess Anne's husband , was in command of the ship.

At the end of October 2005, the Cumberland brought a speedboat with two tons of cocaine on board and an estimated market value of almost 300 million euros after a chase off the coast of Nicaragua .

After an increasing number of pirate attacks off the Somali coast , the ship was underway in the Horn of Africa on behalf of NATO from autumn 2008 . In November 2008, the Cumberland stopped a Somali pirate boat. This resulted in a firefight between the boat and the frigate, in which three pirates were killed.

During the uprising in Libya in February 2011 , the Cumberland was retreating from the Persian Gulf and sent to international waters off the coast of the North African country to help evacuate British citizens.

The Cumberland brought 200 workers from Libya to Malta on February 28, 2011. She entered the port of Valletta .
