The Rolls-Royce Tyne (initially referred to as RB109) was the most powerful turboprop engine in the western world with around 6,000 hp (3259 to 4500 kW) and has since been replaced by the TP400-D6 for the Airbus A400M .

history

It was originally developed for the Vickers Vanguard airliner . Later it served as a drive for the military transport aircraft Transall C-160 (Tyne Mk 22) and the long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft Breguet Atlantic (Tyne Mk 21). The naval versions of the Rolls-Royce Tyne RM1A, RM1C and RM3C are still used today as cruise engines in Sheffield-class destroyers and Broadsword-class frigates in the Royal Navy . In total, more than 1500 engines were built. The 1997 unit price was quoted as around $ 2.0 to $ 2.5 million. From its first run in April 1955 to the 1990s, the engine was produced by Rolls-Royce and at times under license from MTU . MTU maintains and supplies spare parts for the engines that are still in operation.

technology

The single-stage high-pressure turbine with 121 blades made of a nickel alloy drives the nine-stage axial high-pressure compressor with blades made of titanium in the first seven stages, while the 3-stage low-pressure turbine not only drives the propeller (via a reduction gear ) but also the 6-stage low-pressure compressor . The length of the engine (RTy-20 Mk 21/22) is 2.76 m and the maximum diameter 1.4 m. An engine weighs 1129 kg and consumes 0.29 kg / kWh at maximum power.

variants

The maximum output with water-methanol injection is given as the output.

  • RTy-1 Mk 506: 3.259 kW output for Vickers Vanguard Type 951 and Vickers Merchantman, 238 units built
  • RTy-11 Mk 512: 3,776 kW power for Vickers Vanguard Type 952
  • RTy-12 Mk 515: 3.442 kW output for Canadair 400 / CL-44, 227 units built
  • RTy-12 Mk 515-101W: 4.026 kW of power for Shorts Belfast
  • RTy-20 Mk 21: 4.226 kW of power for Dassault Aviation 1150 Atlantic and Atlantique ATL2
  • RTy-20 Mk 22: 4.226 kW power for Transall C-160
  • RTy-20 Mk 801: 3.624 kW of power for Aeritalia G.222T
  • RTy-20 Mk 45: 4,500 kW power for Transall C-160 and Atlantique ATL2

Applications

The Rolls-Royce Tyne was best known for the Transall C-160 , which was the standard transport aircraft of the German and French air forces for decades. In addition, several other types of aircraft were equipped with the Tyne:
