According to the investigations, the explosion in Café Argana, located directly on the very busy market square Djemaa el Fna , which is also visited by tourists , was triggered by a remote ignition. So it was not a suicide attack. The explosion destroyed the ground floor and, to a large extent, the terrace on the upper floor of the building.

Victim

It is the most momentous attack in Morocco since the 2003 Casablanca attacks . 17 fatalities were rescued, including eight French and three Swiss.

Reactions

The UN Security Council in New York condemned the act.

Investigations

A prime suspect has been arrested. He made a confession and took part in a reenactment of the attack on the scene. On September 22, 2011, he retracted his confession. The statements were made under threat of torture . The main defendant, Adil al-Atmani , was sentenced to death on October 28, 2011, and the accomplices received life imprisonment.

On March 9, 2012, an appeals court in Rabat sentenced a second defendant to death. It was Hakim Dah, a confidante of al-Atmani. The court changed the original life sentence into the death penalty. The death penalty against al-Atmani has been upheld. The sentence was increased for six other defendants. Instead of two to four years, they now have to spend six to ten years in prison. The court left the sentence for another co-defendant at two years. All of the defendants deny any connection to jihad or terrorism. The victims' families spoke out against the death penalty so as not to create martyrs.
