action

The Tourette Syndrome ill Vincent, after the death of his alcoholic mother by his father Robert, an ambitious local politician in a specialized clinic in the Allgäu admitted. There he meets the anorexic Marie and his obsessive-compulsive roommate Alexander. Since Vincent wants to fulfill his mother's last wish to see the sea again, the three of them flee the clinic. They steal the car from therapist Dr. Rose and head towards Italy. Vincent has his mother's ashes with him in a candy tin.

When Robert learns of his son's escape, he and Dr. Rose in search of the three. At first he is just out to bring his son, whom he is lovelessly treated, back to the clinic, but during the time he spends with the doctor he develops new feelings for him. Meanwhile, Vincent, Marie and Alex reach the Italian Mediterranean via detours and after a conflict between Vincent and Alex - Alex warns Vincent that Marie has fallen in love with because he does not think she is capable of loving .

On site, Marie collapses because of her heart failure caused by anorexia and is taken to the hospital. After Vincent breaks away from her, he and Alex drive with Dr. Rose and Vincent's father headed for Germany in their cars. On the way, Vincent asks his father to let him get out and goes back to Trieste , where Marie is still in the hospital after her heart attack. Alex follows him.

production

Vincent Wants Sea is based on a script by leading actor Florian David Fitz . The idea for the film came to him after watching a series of television reports about Tourette's syndrome . Fitz, who studied at the Boston Conservatory with a teacher who was ill with tourists, was particularly fond of the “extreme case” of Christian Hempel, whose positive attitude towards his illness impressed Fitz. Fitz asked himself ": What would it be like to write a story about someone who has to grow up under these difficult circumstances?" It was clear to him from the start that he wanted to not only incorporate the tour-sick person into a script as the minor character responsible for the gags , but also wanted to focus directly on the main character. The screenplay for Vincent will Meer was largely created during Fitz's time at the script workshop in Munich, where he applied in 2008 with the aim of “writing something that [he] could possibly play”.

The film was shot on the Nebelhorn in the Allgäu Alps , among other places .

Viola Jäger and Harald Kügler from Olga-Film in Munich could be won over to produce the comedy . The two suggested Ralf Huettner as director for Vincent will Meer , who had to cancel due to other projects. When these disintegrated after disagreements, the originally planned collaboration finally came about. It was not immediately clear that Fitz would take on the lead role, although the director, production and Fitz could quickly agree on it. For the female lead, Karoline Herfurth was approached, who spoke to psychologists about anorexia in preparation for the role . The authentic look required for the role was achieved primarily with the use of make-up. Herfurth, on the other hand, replaced a body double who actually suffered from anorexia in the nude scenes. Agent Nessie Nesslauer only performed a casting for the role of Alexander, and it was decided in favor of Johannes Allmayer . Heino Ferch and Katharina Müller-Elmau had recommended themselves through previous productions with Olga-Film and joined the production at Jäger's suggestion.

The shooting took place from July 28, 2009 to September 15, 2009. In Germany, filming took place in Munich, Berchtesgaden and the Allgäu , including the municipality of Oberstdorf . In the Mangfall Valley , scenes were created in the Bruckmühler districts of Unterleiten and Hinrichssegen, where the local youth center served as the backdrop for the home in which Vincent is housed. In Italy, the two cities of Monfalcone and Trieste in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia acted as filming locations. In addition to the original location, the scenes that played on the Nebelhorn were also shot in the studio. A 360-degree shot showing the three main characters in front of a panorama on the summit cross was filmed in front of a green screen. Huettner decided to make changes to the script both during filming and post-production . A test screening in front of an audience also influenced the narrative. So Huettner decided to end the film with an open ending after the audience declared the actual ending as "unsympathetic".

criticism

Rainer Gansera from epd Film described the film as an "exciting, touching and yet light-footed story". Huettner maintains “the balance between, on the one hand, making the seriousness of the mental illness tangible and, on the other hand, striking a coherent road movie-comedy tone. Above all, he puts his actors in the limelight, brings them into play richly nuanced, leaves room for them to move from the tragic to the comic and then back again idiosyncratic and beautiful contours when the three patients go from being treated to acting and gain new self-confidence ”.

Critics rated Florian David Fitz 's script largely positive.

Andreas R. Becker found on filmstarts.de that “what suggests an uninspired copy of Knocking on Heaven's Door (1997) turns out to be a cheerful and well-cast story with road movie elements. Without ever making fun of the pathological situation of the three unequal travelers or sinking into overwhelming gravity, the film uses the involuntary comedy that inevitably results when Tourette sufferers and obsessive-compulsive neurotics travel together in a confined space and without a plan. Played with a keen sense for interpersonal relationships, the result is a film supported by idyllic images and light guitar pop - original, personable and entertaining ”.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung -Editor Rüdiger Suchsland judged that the film is "not extremely inspired, but always somewhat entertaining". Only the jokes about the handicapped are sometimes “a bit superficial in Vincent wants Meer , an otherwise quiet road movie comedy that fortunately lacks all dismay kitsch.” For Huettner, the production is “at least an honorable comeback that shows how good he is with actors can work, and gives hope that he will be given more opportunities in the cinema again ”.

Jan Oberländer from the Tagesspiegel judged that it wasn't good for the film that it was trying “to be serious and comedic at the same time. Fitz plays the Tourette sufferer impressively, but his character looks like it was designed on the drawing board. 27 years old, twitching since childhood - and never had treatment? An uncomprehending father who, of all people, has to let his son's attractive doctor show him his own wrong path? Even cleanliness freak Alex (Johannes Allmayer) never seems to suffer, but always remains the lovable freak out of the slap ".

Moritz Holfelder from NDR Kultur wrote in his review: “ Vincent will Meer, despite all understandable efforts to be witty and light, lack speed and rhythm in particular. As positive as it is to make a feature film about a couple of handicapped young people, it is deplorable when the work turns out to be quite honest. Only Florian David Fitz and Karoline Herfurth as Vincent and Marie make the humorous conventional comedy an experience: Their attempt to live a rather crazy relationship has the only disturbing power that Vincent will sea then makes suitable for the cinema ”.
