Sam Newton Battenberg Faulkner (born January 11, 1985 in Reigate , Surrey ) is a British singer and songwriter .

He is known for his guitar playing, which is characterized by percussive playing on the guitar body and unusual plucking techniques.

Life

Faulkner attended a private elementary school called Hawthorns in Bletchingley near Reigate . At the age of 13, after trying drums and piano, he began playing the guitar and attended the Italia Conti Academy in London . In 1999 he had his signature dreadlocks waxed. In 2001 he moved to the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford , where he studied for two years and graduated with a diploma. Faulkner completed an advanced diploma course under his mentor Eric Roche .

His first band was a Green Day cover band in which he played bass guitar. His stage experience grew steadily, especially when he and his friends Matt Buchanan, Dave Elvy and Nicola Crawshaw formed his band Half a Guy , a funky rock group with a wayward style. The band existed for two years and recorded two demo CDs. He then worked in the studio and played several concerts under his name Newton Battenberg Faulkner , including the Lapagestock Festival on June 11, 2005 in Brent Knoll , Somerset . His title Take Back also became part of the TrackMania Sunrise soundtrack , which was released in April 2005.

Faulkner celebrated the greatest successes in England . Appearances on BBC Radio 2 and a contract with Peermusic UK helped the songwriter to get media attention. In 2006 Faulkner performed at the South-by-Southwest Music Festival and 2007 at the Guilfest. Faulkner then signed a record deal with the Sony BMG record company and released his debut album Hand Built by Robots on July 30, 2007 .

In 2010 he performed at the T in the Park Festival in Kinross , Scotland , where the recordings for You instead were made. Newton was also a support artist for the tours of a number of well-known artists such as James Morrison , Paolo Nutini , John Mayer , John Butler Trio and Amy Macdonald .

style

His unusual guitar playing comes into its own when performing live. “When tapping, ” Faulkner describes his approach, “you hit the strings pretty hard with the plucking hand. You can create tones on both sides of the strings. This works extremely well with some frets - you get two notes that harmonize with each other. It then sounds like more than is actually being played. You can elicit notes from both strings of the guitar ”.
