biography

Eric Roche was born in New York City, but his family moved to Tralee , County Kerry , Ireland soon after he was born . He was a trained accountant but only worked as such for a short time before enrolling in classical guitar at the London Musician's Institute in 1992 . After graduating, he became head of the guitar department there in 1996 and released his first CD, The Perc U Lator , three years later . In 2000 he accepted the post of guitar director at the Academy of Contemporary Music , Guildford . In 2001 his second CD Spin came out. In 2004 Roche released his third album With These Hands and his textbook The Acoustic Guitar Bible , a comprehensive guide to playing the acoustic guitar with a foreword by Tommy Emmanuel . Roche was a regular columnist for Guitar Techniques and Acoustic Guitar magazines and hosted international workshops .

Roche combined a variety of styles on the solo guitar, such as classical music , Celtic music , folk , jazz , blues , rock and pop . He was a gifted composer and virtuoso guitarist and known as an innovative arranger of songs by other musicians, such as Eddie Van Halen , Stevie Wonder , Seal , Miles Davis , Fine Young Cannibals , the Beatles , Dave Brubeck and Nirvana .

His percussive style was characteristic of his playing style, in that he used the guitar body like a drum to produce various rhythmic accents and tones. In addition, with the help of a protective film glued to the body, it produced noises that are very similar to the scratching technique used by DJs . In addition to the standard guitar tuning , Roche used various open tunings , especially DADGAD .

Eric Roche died of salivary gland cancer at the age of 37 after a long illness. He left behind his wife Candy and his two children Stefan and Francesca.

Eric Roche's death caused consternation among many of his fellow musicians. For Eric , a tribute CD, was released shortly after his death in 2005, it contains 20 pieces, 18 by other guitarists and two by Roche himself. Guthrie Govan dedicated the title "Eric" to him on his solo album Erotic Cakes in 2006 . In 2006 the guitar faculty of the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford was renamed "ACM Eric Roche Guitar School". In the same year Roche's Tablature Collection # 1 was published, published by Roche and his friend Thomas Leeb , who waived any compensation in favor of Roche's wife and children.
