Westbense

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Westbense is a district of the town of Esens in the Wittmund district . The district is the remnant of the church village of Bense, which probably went under in 1570. In the Middle Ages, this was about 600 meters further north in the area of today's Wadden Sea behind a dike. In 1420 the church of Westbense is mentioned in the Stader Copiar , on the map by Ubbo Emmius from 1592 Westbense is shown as a village on a Hallig off the coast. The rest of the parish was incorporated into the Magnus Church in Esens.

The municipality of Westbense in the district of Wittmund, to which the place Bensersiel belonged, was renamed to Bensersiel on December 23, 1938 . The municipality of Bensersiel was incorporated into the city of Esens on July 1, 1972.
