Fine Young Cannibals
Fine Young Cannibals were a British band formed in Birmingham in 1984 and mostly successful in the second half of the 1980s. The biggest hits are Johnny Come Home (1985), She Drives Me Crazy (1989) and Good Thing (1989).
history
Named after the jazz melodrama All the Fine Young Cannibals (English title: Fruits of a Passion ) with Natalie Wood from 1960, the musicians came together in their hometown of Birmingham. Cox and Steele were previously members of the skaband The Beat . They found the Fine Young with their first singles Johnny Come Home and Blue , released in 1985, as well as the idiosyncratic, sometimes driving, sometimes melancholy and jazzy- poppy music style that did not appeal to the pop market, as well as the soulful , often choking voice of Roland Gift Cannibals quickly gained attention in Great Britain and also had initial successes in Germany and Switzerland.
Her Elvis - Cover Suspicious Minds caught on. Less impressed the fans were Buzzcocks from the version of the title Ever Fallen in Love , which the FYC 1986 soundtrack of the film Something Wild (Something Wild) contributed.
As agreed, the musicians then turned to their own projects. While Gift proved himself as an actor with some success in film and on stage, Cox and Steele founded the house music project Two Men, a Drum Machine and a Trumpet .
The album The Raw and the Cooked (named after the book Das Rohe und das Gekochte by the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss ), released in early 1989, stormed the international charts. The hit single She Drives Me Crazy stayed in the top 20 in Germany for 16 weeks and reached second place there. Despite these successes, the band kept a critical distance from show business. When they were about to receive the Brit Award for The Raw and the Cooked , they gave the price back because they did not want to go to Margaret Thatcher for a photo opportunity and advertising opportunity in connection with the public award .
Cox and Steele edited the album and re-released it as The Raw and the Remix in late 1990 . In 1992 the band separated.
At the end of 1996 a greatest hits album was released with a new piece recorded especially for it. As part of the Super Bowl broadcast, " She Drives Me Crazy " was used in a 2019 commercial . The hit sales increased by over 2,000%.
