Tin Men (alternatively: Tin Men - Two Hair-raising Rivals ) is an American comedy film directed by Barry Levinson from 1987 .

action

Tin Men are "sheet metal sellers", agents who deal in aluminum facades, which were very popular in America in the 1950s and 1960s . With all sorts of legal and illegal tricks they try to get homeowners to sign a contract in order to get their commission.

One of the most successful in Baltimore in 1963 is Bill Babowsky, known as "BB" ( Richard Dreyfuss ). He buys the newest Tailfin - Cadillac to underline his status. But no sooner is he driving from the dealer than Ernest Tilley ( Danny DeVito ), a tin man of the competition, crashes into his brand new car.

The two hotheads immediately clash. A guerrilla war breaks out in which everyone tries to get revenge. First they let off steam in the cars. Finally, BB approaches Tilley's wife Nora, ( Barbara Hershey ). When Tilley finds out about it, he throws Nora's things on the street. Now BB has her permanently living with him, which, as a die-hard bachelor, is initially not right for him. Meanwhile, Tilley gets into deeper and deeper difficulties. He has tax debts and hasn't landed a sale in weeks.

The colleagues from BB and Tilley are mainly interested in food, cars, horse racing or the television series Bonanza . They try in vain to reconcile the two fighters.

They finally find themselves as defendants at a hearing of the "House Improvement Commission", which proves illegal tricks and withdraws their license to sell aluminum facades. BB is only okay with this because shortly before that, he had seen his long-term partner Moe wore out his health and had to go out of business.

BB and Tilley then meet in the parking lot. Tilley's car was confiscated by the tax authorities . BB takes him with him in his car and suddenly they get along brilliantly and forge new plans. BB has had the idea of selling these weird little humpbacked German cars in the US for a long time .

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of March 6, 1987 that the style of the film was reminiscent of the " inspired comedy " Levinson's American Diner . The film is funny in its quieter parts too; good jokes would always hurt a little.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was an " enigmatic comedy " that was " turbulent ", " funny " and " loving in its personal description ". The comedy develops into a " tragic comedy with satirical swipes at the American business world ".

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

background

The film was shot in Baltimore . Its production amounted to an estimated 11 million US dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 25.4 million in US cinemas.
