The Bay is an American horror film from 2012 that consists entirely of found footage- style scenes . Directed by Barry Levinson . The film premiered on November 2, 2012 at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival .

action

The port city of Claridge thrives on tourism and its proximity to the sea. One day millions of fish will be washed ashore. People who come into contact with the water exhibit behavioral changes, and birds fall from the sky by the thousands. On July 4, 2009, a disaster struck the city that was apparently intended to be covered up. Only a few video recordings show what actually happened that day. Some time later, a resident published the video material she had collected about the incident. It turns out that Chesapeake Bay has been contaminated with a parasite - Cymothoa exigua - which quickly spread across the country. The reason for the rapid spread of the disease was the drinking water contaminated with parasites.

style

The film is filmed from several perspectives: Firstly, from the point of view of the researchers who want to investigate the cause of the environmental pollution and thereby find indications of the contamination. Second, from the perspective of a couple who want to visit their family on the island. There they notice how people are dying or lying dead on the streets. Before an ambulance arrives, the man dies in front of his wife and child. Third, from the perspective of a doctor who comes to the aid of the sick, but then infects himself and dies. And finally from the point of view of a journalist who was supposed to do a report about Independence Day in the city, but which, due to the intervention of the FBI, was not allowed to be distributed on the Internet.

criticism

The lexicon of international film rates the film as a “convincing 'found footage' horror film” that succeeds in transforming “a sensible framework into a captivating eco-thriller”.
