360 degree video

Example of a 360 degree video

A 360-degree video (also immersive video , spherical video or VR video , which is usually also designed for two eyes and viewed with a head-mounted display ) is a video that allows a view in all directions (360 degrees ) from the point of view of the camera. Photographs are also referred to as spherical or spherical panoramas. If a video can only be viewed around one and not two axes, this is called 180-degree video , which in photography corresponds to a panoramic image.

360-degree videos are recorded with an omnidirectional camera or a combination of several cameras pointing in different directions. Because of their small size, smaller action cams are preferred . Another option is to film with a camera from several angles and then use software to combine them into a 360-degree video (so-called stitching ). Due to the dynamics, this technology is more suitable for still images. For virtual 3D worlds such as computer games, there is special software for setting a VR mode and then recording.

Reproduction and publication

The Google Cardboard or comparable models are often used to watch 360-degree videos in VR

360-degree and 180-degree videos can be published on video portals such as YouTube or Vimeo , on which you can navigate through the individual perspectives of the image with the mouse or touchscreen. Another possibility is to use a head-mounted display , which shows the video in virtual reality . A gyro sensor is usually used here, which is built into many modern smartphones, so that they can be used as a head-mounted display with a corresponding device such as the Google Cardboard , Google Daydream View or the Samsung Gear VR . In contrast to a full VR experience, however, the user is tied to his current position and can look around freely, but not move freely in the world. Sickness can also occur when using the simulator . Sony is working on three-dimensional viewing and interaction with 360-degree videos.

application

Frequent video topics are, for example, the use of a ride, sports or travel or location shots ("interactive tours and tours") as well as recorded and broadcast events. This allows most inaccessible areas such as space to be shown or the insights of robots in robotics to be better observed. There are further possibilities in filmic and digital storytelling, in art and in journalistic reporting. 360-degree videos are also an important market for the porn industry .

The first 360-degree film for an Oscar nomination, was the animated music - Short Pearl of Google Spotlight Stories. It has also won ten other prizes and was published free of charge on the YouTube platform.

distribution

In March 2018, Facebook stated that over a million 360-degree videos had already been published on the Facebook Surround 360 page .
