Quartz is a business news portal founded in 2012 in New York City . The headquarters are in New York City with offices in India and Africa .

In 2012 Quartz launched its website qz.com , the content of which is primarily aimed at users of mobile devices and tablets . Team members from news media outlets such as Bloomberg.com , The Economist , The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal helped create it. According to its own information, the Quartz team reports from 115 countries in 19 languages.

The company's headquarters are in New York City. There are also correspondents and reporters in Los Angeles , Washington, DC London, Hong Kong, India and Thailand. In 2014 Quartz expanded to India and founded the Quartz India portal. Quartz Africa followed in 2015.

Quartz's target group are high-earning digital natives . Sixty percent of reader access to the website is from mobile devices. Forty percent of the traffic is from users outside the United States .

The company originally offered freely available digital information, in 2018 a paid membership was introduced and in 2019 a paywall was created . Since then, non-paying users have only been able to read five articles per month for free.

In 2015, the Internet portal Quartz established the Atlas diagram creation platform, which is used to create its diagrams. This tool is also used by other media outlets including CNBC , FiveThirtyEight, NBC News , New Hampshire Public Radio , NPR, The New Yorker , The Press-Enterprise, CEOWORLD Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal .

Quartz has also launched two vertical portals: In October 2017 Quartz at Work with the topics career and workplace and in November 2017 Quartzy for culture and lifestyle.

According to the marketing service provider AdAge, Quartz generated sales of 30 million US dollars in 2016 and employed 175 people. In 2017, revenue was only $ 27.6 million due to declining advertising revenue.

In August 2017, the Quartz site qz.com had more than 22 million unique visitors . More than 700,000 people subscribe to one of Quartz 's email newsletters .

In July 2018, Quartz was sold to the Japanese media company Uzabase. The purchase price for the 6 months to the end of 2018 should be performance-based between $ 75 and 110 million US dollars.

Qz.com's global Alexa Rank in September 2019 was 3269.
