The Google Cardboard is a holder of cardboard, which made some smart phones a virtual reality glasses makes.

construction

In addition to the box, the construction consists of two converging lenses and a pressure switch. In the first version from 2014, this consisted of two magnets that act as an actuation button by acting on the smartphone's magnetic sensor; in the second version from 2015 a switch with a conductive reference.

The lid is closed with a Velcro fastener . If you now open an app on your smartphone with the support of a stereoscopic view, the VR glasses turn the two individual images into a 3D image. You can also look around this 3D VR world through the sensors in your smartphone; the rotation of your head is transmitted to the app.

The VR glasses were designed by Google and presented at Google I / O in 2014 . Google does not make glasses itself, but has developed instructions for manufacturers as well as instructions with the individual parts required to make VR glasses yourself. Various providers worldwide produce good quality Google Cardboards. In 2016, several models will be offered for less than 10 euros.

Google Cardboard helped developers take their first steps to create VR applications. Google provides an SDK for Android and Unity to facilitate the development of the apps. Some mobile web browsers now support WebVR , so programming in JavaScript is also possible.

Companies have also promoted the spread of Google Cardboards with marketing campaigns. These include the New York Times, which sent 1 million cardboards to its subscribers. In this way, around 16 million Google Cardboards had come into circulation by July 2016. This has resulted in an entire industry that offers and sells individually printed Google Cardboards.

Other companies have developed VR apps for Google Cardboard such as B. Volvo , HELLER or Mammut .
