Google Daydream was a virtual reality headset for Android devices (from Android Nougat 7.1). It was developed by Google . Smartphones that meet the requirements of software and hardware are called Daydream-ready. In contrast to its predecessor, the cheaper Google Cardboard , longer and professional use is also in the foreground. In addition to the software, it also marketed its own head-mounted display with a controller , the Google Daydream View .

history

The platform was first announced in May 2016 at the Google I / O developer conference. The first VR headset was released on November 10, 2016.

In January 2017 the Daydream program was opened for all developers.

The Lenovo Mirage Solo Headset was presented at CES 2018 , which does not require a smartphone, but has the technology built in directly (standalone, comparable to Oculus Go ). The market launch took place in May 2018.

On October 15, 2019, Google announced at the launch of the Pixel 4 smartphone that the device does not support Daydream. There was already no support for the Pixel 3a. The Daydream View HMD was discontinued on the same day. Google will no longer certify any further devices for Daydream in the future.

Headset

The company's own VR headset, the Daydream View, can be used to use Daydream applications. The headset was first introduced on October 4th, 2016. Smartphones can be inserted into the headset so that the content of the smartphone can be viewed in VR using the lenses. An NFC chip is integrated to simplify the creation process . The first headset was released on November 10, 2016 at a retail price of 79 US dollars. The Verge praises that the headset is smaller, more compliant, lighter and more mobile than the other VR headsets and can therefore be worn longer. The design is also praised.

At a 2017 Google event it was announced that there will be a new version with a revised design, more color selection and an expanded field of view. It was released on October 19, 2017, with an increased starting price of $ 99. In addition, the lenses and the headband have been redesigned. A radiator should ensure that it gets cooler.

Controller

A wireless controller is included in the headset package . The controller has buttons and motion sensors with which different actions can be carried out. The sensors are used to record the direction and movement of the controller and user. The controller can be stored in the headset when not in use. A touchpad , two circular buttons (one as a home button and one for app actions), two buttons for regulating the volume and a status bar are available. The controller can be charged via USB-C . However, a charger or cable is not included in the scope of delivery and must be purchased separately.

software

The VR mode allows multimedia apps to be viewed in VR and games to be played in VR. Partners are u. a. Netflix and Ubisoft . The course of movement is queried via the smartphone's gyroscope sensor .
