The Oculus Go is a virtual reality headset that was released on May 1, 2018. You don't need a computer , game console or smartphone to use the headset because, unlike the Oculus Rift and Oculus Rift S , the hardware is already built into the glasses.

The headset was developed by Oculus VR (a subsidiary of Facebook Inc. ) in collaboration with Qualcomm and Xiaomi and is sold in China as Xiaomi Mi VR . The Oculus Quest is an expensive variant that offers better performance and room tracking ( 6DoF instead of 3DoF) .

Headset

The headset is equipped with a 5.5- inch - LCD display with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels (1280 × 1440 pixels per eye) and high-quality Fresnel lenses fitted to be used in the Oculus Rift. The refresh rate is between 72 or 60 Hz , depending on the software used.

The headset is based on a Snapdragon 821 processor from Qualcomm and is powered by a 2600 mAh battery. It has non-positional motion tracking with 3 degrees of freedom and a small controller that can be moved like a laser pointer . Movements while sitting and standing are possible. However, the freedom of movement to the PC versions is severely restricted and cannot be expanded. The headset also has built-in speakers. The main memory has 3GB available.

The Oculus Go remote control is a wireless remote control that allows you to track hand movement and tilt. It also serves as a pointer and control unit for the headset. The controller is powered by one AA battery . The remote control differs from previous VR controllers in that both hands can be selected for the Oculus Go functions and only one controller is required.

Models and accessories

The Oculus Go is available in two NAND flash memory configurations: one with 32 GB of internal storage for $ 199 and one with 64 GB of internal storage for $ 249. A more expensive business version with additional accessories, warranty and support is also available. Oculus offers accessories and replacement parts on its website , including a carry case, replacement controllers, and facial accessories.

history

The headset was unveiled on October 11, 2017 at the Oculus Connect Developer Conference. Oculus Go was developed in collaboration with Qualcomm , a major US developer of mobile system-on-a-chip systems, and Xiaomi , one of China's largest smartphone manufacturer. In collaboration with Oculus, Xiaomi has released a renamed version of the headset called Xiaomi Mi VR , which was specially developed for the Chinese market. The headset was released on May 1, 2018. As of January 2019, the Oculus Go had sold over a million times.

In September 2018, Walmart announced that it would be using Oculus Go headsets to expand its employee VR training program in the United States . The company will send four headsets to each Walmart mall and two headsets to each neighborhood market and discount store. More than 17,000 units had been shipped in this way by the end of 2018.

software

In order to configure the Oculus Go, the Oculus application must be downloaded to a computer , smartphone or tablet . After establishing a Bluetooth connection between the headset and the device to which the configuration application has been downloaded, the headset and the remote control as well as a replacement controller can be configured. As soon as the Oculus Go and the remote control are configured, the VR headset can establish a Wi-Fi connection, access software and games from the Oculus Store and use the remaining functions of the operating system, which is based on Android .

Reviews

The headset received mostly positive reviews. Critics particularly praised the design and feel of the Go, the image quality of the display, the built-in loudspeakers and the appropriate price-performance ratio .

On the other hand, slow loading, limited motion control and the lack of expandable memory are criticized . CNET calls the headset “mobile VR for the mass market,” which is a view shared by other trade magazines.

In May 2018, Andreas Hronopoulos, CEO of adult entertainment company Naughty America , described the Go as an "important influencing factor for the porn industry " and stated that sales of VR porn had increased since the Oculus Go went on sale earlier this month. Xavi Clos, Production Manager at BaDoinkVR , expects the device to be well suited for the porn industry due to its comparatively low cost factor.

Sales figures

While official sales figures have not yet been published, according to the International Data Corporation , the Oculus Go and Xiaomi Mi VR had sold a total of almost 250,000 times in the third quarter of 2018. In January 2019, market research firm SuperData estimated that over a million Oculus Go units have been sold since the device was launched.

In a keynote presentation at the Oculus Connect Developer Conference in 2018, John Carmack noted that the Oculus Go's retention rate was as high as the Rift's, which no one in the company had predicted. Carmack also noted that the Oculus Go did particularly well in Japan, although the device wasn't well designed for internationalization and the company wasn't specifically geared towards the Japanese market.
